Destruction of Native Trees in Historic Brighton by Bayside City Council

The leafy, seaside suburb of Brighton in Melbourne is famous not only for its colourful beach-boxes but for its wide, tree-lined streets and beautiful Victorian and Edwardian villas.

Today, not only are many of these wonderful houses currently subject to wanton destruction by developers constructing ugly, multi-unit buildings but the suburb's established native trees are being torn down.

The Bayside City Council has not only been responsible for the loss of irreplaceable houses and gardens, but has approved the destruction of these Melaleuca (paperbark) trees in Brighton's Chelsea Street, opposite the Brighton Baths and Yacht Club.

The chopping down of these trees is an evironmental disaster for local endangered birds and insects. Eight of these trees have already been destroyed on Saturday, despite public outcries from residents and environmentalists. The trees also offer pleasant shade in summer and give the street its distinctive beauty and amenity.

The destruction of the trees by the Bayside City Council was done at the behest of a private petition, organised by a wealthy resident of the street who did not want the evergreen trees to drop leaves or sap on to their Mercedes vehicles parked in the street (even though the house has a double garage).

The thick-trunked Australian trees with sculptural white bark have fragrant flowers and bushy canopies that are home to many native birds and insects, including finches, Little Friarbirds, rosellas, Scarlet Honeyeaters, Orange-bellied Parrots, the Eastern Curlew and native bees.

Called paperbarks and belonging to the melaleuca family, the trees in Chelsea Street are more than 50 years old and can live to a great age. The trees are in a healthy state and conservationists say they are important to the survival of a wide range of endangered native birds, animals and insects that rely on them for shelter and food.

Brighton MP James Newbury received "numerous approaches from residents" about the issue and he wrote to the Mayor of the City of Bayside, Councillor Michael Heffernan. The Mayor responded that he received the petition last year in February 2018. Although he states, the trees are to be destroyed because they are in "declining health"; independent arborists say the trees are all in an excellent state and there is no need for the so-called "Large Scale Tree Replacement" by the council.

Even more alarming than the destruction of these trees is their planned replacement by the fast-growing Chinese Elm. This alien species is against all current conservation practices and will do nothing to enhance the local environment or provide for the myriad number of native birds and insects which make Brighton such a magnet for locals and visitors.

The Chinese elm is not native to Australia and does not only offer no food or habitat for local birds and insects, but is considered highly invasive. It spreads its seed easily in the wind and is self-pollinating and is listed as an invasive species by Brisbane City Council and the Queensland Government along with other local government authorities.

We are living in an age when endangered Australian birds are disappearing at an alarming rate because of the destruction of their habitat. Experts across the country point out how important suburban gardens and streets with native plants and trees are to their survival.

The bottlebrush-like flowers of the paperbark tree also attract nectar-feeding birds, such as honeyeaters and lorikeets. Paperbark trees are considered excellent for attracting Australian wildlife into local gardens and streets.

It is time Mayor Michael Heffernan not only started to protect the historic built enviornment of Brighton but also its natural one, from destructive vested interests, by stopping the felling of the Paperbark trees in Chelsea Street.

Plastic Pollution Harms the Bacteria That Help us Breathe

Ten per cent of the oxygen we breathe comes from just one kind of bacteria in the ocean. Now laboratory tests have shown that these bacteria are susceptible to plastic pollution, according to a study published in Communications Biology.

“We found that exposure to chemicals leaching from plastic pollution interfered with the growth, photosynthesis and oxygen production of Prochlorococcus, the ocean’s most abundant photosynthetic bacteria,” says lead author and Macquarie University researcher Dr Sasha Tetu.

“Now we’d like to explore if plastic pollution is having the same impact on these microbes in the ocean.”

Plastic pollution has been estimated to cause more than US$13 billion in economic damage to marine ecosystems each year, and the problem is only getting worse with marine plastic pollution estimated to outweigh fish by 2050.

“This pollution can leach a variety of chemical additives into marine environments, but unlike the threats posed by animals ingesting or getting entangled in plastic debris the threat these leachates pose to marine life has received relatively little attention,” says Dr Lisa Moore, a co-author on the paper.

In the first study of its kind, the researchers looked at the effects these chemicals have on the smallest life in our oceans, photosynthetic marine bacteria.

“We looked at a group of tiny, green bacteria called Prochlorococcus which is the most abundant photosynthetic organism on Earth, with a global population of around three octillion (~1027) individuals,” says Sasha.

These microbes are heavy lifters when it comes to carbohydrate and oxygen production in the ocean via photosynthesis.

“These tiny microorganisms are critical to the marine food web, contribute to carbon cycling and are thought to be responsible for up to 10 per cent of the total global oxygen production,” says Lisa, explaining the fundamental importance of these microbes to ocean health.

“So one in every ten breaths of oxygen you breathe in is thanks to these little guys, yet almost nothing is known about how marine bacteria, such as Prochlorococcus respond to human pollutants.”

In the lab, the team exposed two strains of Prochlorococcus found at different depths in the ocean to chemicals leached from two common plastic products—grey plastic grocery bags (made from high-density polyethylene) and PVC matting.

They found that exposure to these chemicals impaired the growth and function of these microbes—including the amount of oxygen they produce—as well as altering the expression of a large number of their genes.

“Our data shows that plastic pollution may have widespread ecosystem impacts beyond the known effects on macro-organisms, such as seabirds and turtles,” says Sasha.

“If we truly want to understand the full impact of plastic pollution in the marine environment and find ways to mitigate it, we need to consider its impact on key microbial groups, including photosynthetic microbes.”

Apple Achieved Milestones in Environmental Protection

Apple recently released its 13th annual Supplier Responsibility Progress Report detailing how the company is expanding educational opportunities and protecting the planet’s resources.

As of 2018, 17.3 million supplier employees have been trained on workplace rights, and 3.6 million have received advanced education and skills training. All final assembly sites for iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, AirPods and HomePod are now certified Zero Waste to Landfill, while conserving billions of gallons of water and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

“In everything we do, people come first,” said Jeff Williams, Apple’s chief operating officer. “We are constantly raising the bar for ourselves and our suppliers because we are committed to the people who make our products possible as well as the planet we all share. This year, we’re proud to give more people an opportunity to advance their education. Working alongside our suppliers, we’re challenging ourselves to find new ways to keep our planet healthy for future generations. Our goal has always been not just to drive progress in our supply chain, but to drive meaningful change across the industry.”

In 2018, Apple built on its existing educational and career-building programs for supplier employees by adding courses that include App Development with Swift. The program’s first participants created more than 40 apps, ranging from workplace tools to games. Last year, more than 1,500 employees at Apple suppliers earned a college degree, adding to the thousands who have taken advantage of education programming, which expands every year. Additionally, Apple has worked with its suppliers to create health training programs that have reached more than 250,000 people globally, and include courses on nutrition and maternal health.

Apple has also strengthened its efforts to help its supply chain conserve resources, expand the adoption of safer chemicals and reduce pollution. In prioritizing Zero Waste to Landfill, Apple suppliers have diverted 1 million tons of garbage in three years. Apple’s clean water program expanded to 116 suppliers, resulting in 7.6 billion gallons of water saved in 2018 — one gallon for every person on the planet. The company also worked with suppliers to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by more than 466,000 annualized metric tons, which is equivalent to taking 100,000 cars off the road for one year.

Every year, Apple demands its suppliers meet higher standards for safe and respectful workplaces. Companies are assessed according to Apple’s Supplier Code of Conduct, which includes more than 500 criteria, and Apple works with suppliers on the ground to achieve improvements where needed.

In 2018, the company increased support for new mothers — leading the industry in requiring suppliers to provide nursing rooms on site. To make sure suppliers were meeting this and other standards, Apple conducted 770 assessments of facilities in more than 30 countries in 2018, covering 93 percent of the company’s supplier spend.

NASA Selects Mission to Study Space Weather from Space Station

NASA has selected a new mission that will help scientists understand and, ultimately, forecast the vast space weather system around our planet. Space weather is important because it can have profound impacts – affecting technology and astronauts in space, disrupting radio communications and, at its most severe, overwhelming power grids.

The new experiment will, for the first time, obtain global observations of an important driver of space weather in a dynamic region of Earth’s upper atmosphere that can cause interference with radio and GPS communications.

The Atmospheric Waves Experiment (AWE) mission will cost $42 million and is planned to launch in August 2022, attached to the exterior of the Earth-orbiting International Space Station. From its space station perch, AWE will focus on colorful bands of light in Earth’s atmosphere, called airglow, to determine what combination of forces drive space weather in the upper atmosphere.

Researchers once thought that only the Sun’s constant outflow of ultraviolet light and particles, the solar wind, could affect the region. However, recently they have learned that solar variability is not enough to drive the changes observed, and Earth’s weather also must be having an effect. To help unravel that connection, AWE will investigate how waves in the lower atmosphere, caused by variations in the densities of different packets of air, impact the upper atmosphere.

AWE is a Mission of Opportunity under NASA’s Heliophysics Explorers Program, which conducts focused scientific research and develops instrumentation to fill the scientific gaps between the agency’s larger missions. Since the 1958 launch of NASA’s first satellite Explorer 1, which discovered Earth’s radiation belts, the Explorers Program has supported more than 90 missions. The Uhuru and Cosmic Background Explorer (COBE) missions led to Nobel prizes for their investigators.

“The Explorers Program seeks innovative ideas for small and cost-constrained missions that can help unravel the mysteries of the universe and explore our place in it,” said Paul Hertz, NASA’s Director of Astrophysics. “This mission absolutely meets that standard with a creative and cost-effective mission to solve mysteries about Earth’s upper atmosphere.”

AWE was selected for development based on its potential science value and the feasibility of its development plans. The mission is led by Michael Taylor at Utah State University in Logan and it is managed by the Explorers Program Office at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland.

NASA also has selected the Sun Radio Interferometer Space Experiment (SunRISE) for a seven-month, $100,000 extended formulation study. SunRISE would be an array of six CubeSats operating like one large radio telescope. This proposed mission would investigate how giant space weather storms from the Sun, called solar particle storms, are accelerated and released into planetary space.

While SunRISE has not yet demonstrated its readiness for the next phase of mission development, the proposed concept represents a compelling use of new NASA-developed technology. SunRISE is led by Justin Kasper at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and managed by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California.

The Explorers Program, the oldest continuous NASA program, is designed to provide frequent, low-cost access to space using principal investigator-led space science investigations relevant to the work of NASA’s Science Mission Directorate in astrophysics and heliophysics.

The program is managed by Goddard for the Science Mission Directorate, which conducts a wide variety of research and scientific exploration programs for Earth studies, space weather, the solar system and universe.

2018 Was The Fourth Warmest Year Since Records Began

Earth's global surface temperatures in 2018 were the fourth warmest since 1880, according to independent analyses by NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

Global temperatures in 2018 were 1.5 degrees Fahrenheit (0.83 degrees Celsius) warmer than the 1951 to 1980 mean, according to scientists at NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) in New York. Globally, 2018's temperatures rank behind those of 2016, 2017 and 2015. The past five years are, collectively, the warmest years in the modern record.

“2018 is yet again an extremely warm year on top of a long-term global warming trend,” said GISS Director Gavin Schmidt.

Since the 1880s, the average global surface temperature has risen about 2 degrees Fahrenheit (1 degree Celsius). This warming has been driven in large part by increased emissions into the atmosphere of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases caused by human activities, according to Schmidt.

Weather dynamics often affect regional temperatures, so not every region on Earth experienced similar amounts of warming. NOAA found the 2018 annual mean temperature for the contiguous 48 United States was the 14th warmest on record.

Warming trends are strongest in the Arctic region, where 2018 saw the continued loss of sea ice. In addition, mass loss from the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets continued to contribute to sea level rise. Increasing temperatures can also contribute to longer fire seasons and some extreme weather events, according to Schmidt.

“The impacts of long-term global warming are already being felt — in coastal flooding, heat waves, intense precipitation and ecosystem change,” said Schmidt.

NASA’s temperature analyses incorporate surface temperature measurements from 6,300 weather stations, ship- and buoy-based observations of sea surface temperatures, and temperature measurements from Antarctic research stations.

These raw measurements are analyzed using an algorithm that considers the varied spacing of temperature stations around the globe and urban heat island effects that could skew the conclusions. These calculations produce the global average temperature deviations from the baseline period of 1951 to 1980.

Because weather station locations and measurement practices change over time, the interpretation of specific year-to-year global mean temperature differences has some uncertainties. Taking this into account, NASA estimates that 2018’s global mean change is accurate to within 0.1 degree Fahrenheit, with a 95 percent certainty level.

NOAA scientists used much of the same raw temperature data, but with a different baseline period and different interpolation into the Earth’s polar and other data poor regions. NOAA’s analysis found 2018 global temperatures were 1.42 degrees Fahrenheit (0.79 degrees Celsius) above the 20th century average.

The agency also uses airborne and ground-based monitoring, and develops new ways to observe and study Earth with long-term data records and computer analysis tools to better see how our planet is changing. They Were Defrosting Leopard Seal Poo... You Won't Believe What Happened Next!

For more than a year a frozen slab of leopard seal poo sat in a National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research “NIWA” freezer.

The poo, known scientifically as scat and about the size of two bread rolls, is as good as gold for leopard seal researchers. It can tell them what these Antarctic predators eat, a little bit about their health and how long they may have been in New Zealand waters.

It’s so valuable to scientific research that NIWA marine biologist Dr Krista Hupman and the team at LeopardSeals.org run a network of volunteer scat collectors up and down the country who gather the evidence and send it to her for analysis.

That’s why a local vet, out checking on the health of a skinny leopard seal resting on Oreti Beach, Invercargill, picked up a scat sample, packaged it up and sent it to Dr Hupman who popped it in the freezer.

That was November, 2017. And there it stayed until three weeks ago when it was removed by volunteers Jodie Warren and Melanie Magnan.

Theirs is not glamorous work.

First they must defrost the sample. “Then we basically have to sift it. You put it under the cold tap, get all the gross stuff off, smoosh it around a bit and separate the bones, feathers, seaweed and other stuff,” explains Jodie.

The unexpected discovery:

This was all happening when they discovered something large and hard. Concealed deep inside the scat was a USB stick. Jodie was not impressed.

“It is very worrying that these amazing Antarctic animals have plastic like this inside them.”

But the memory stick was in reasonably good condition considering where it had come from. So they left it to dry out for the next couple of weeks in the hope they may be able to see what information it contained.

And, ironically, there are photos of sealions at Porpoise Bay in the Caitlins and a video of a mum and baby sealion frolicking in the shallows, the only clue to who might have taken them is the nose of a blue kayak.

If they’re yours and you want the USB stick back, it comes with a price. The leopard seal researchers would like some more leopard seal scat please.

“The more we can find out about these creatures, the more we can ensure they are looked after.”

Dr Hupman’s work also includes analysing leopard seal sightings in a bid to determine whether they are becoming more prevalent in New Zealand waters.

Warming Seas May Increase Frequency of Extreme Storms

A new NASA study shows that warming of the tropical oceans due to climate change could lead to a substantial increase in the frequency of extreme rain storms by the end of the century.

The study team, led by Hartmut Aumann of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, combed through 15 years of data acquired by NASA's Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) instrument over the tropical oceans to determine the relationship between the average sea surface temperature and the onset of severe storms.

They found that extreme storms — those producing at least 0.12 inches (3 millimeters) of rain per hour over a 16-mile (25-kilometer) area — formed when the sea surface temperature was higher than about 82 degrees Fahrenheit (28 degrees Celsius). They also found that, based on the data, 21 percent more storms form for every 1.8 degrees Fahrenheit (1 degree Celsius) that ocean surface temperatures rise.

“It is somewhat common sense that severe storms will increase in a warmer environment. Thunderstorms typically occur in the warmest season of the year," Aumann explained. "But our data provide the first quantitative estimate of how much they are likely to increase, at least for the tropical oceans."

Currently accepted climate models project that with a steady increase of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere (1 percent per year), tropical ocean surface temperatures may rise by as much as 4.8 degrees Fahrenheit (2.7 degrees Celsius) by the end of the century. The study team concludes that if this were to happen, we could expect the frequency of extreme storms to increase by as much as 60 percent by that time.

Although climate models aren't perfect, results like these can serve as a guideline for those looking to prepare for the potential effects a changing climate may have.

“Our results quantify and give a more visual meaning to the consequences of the predicted warming of the oceans," Aumann said. "More storms mean more flooding, more structure damage, more crop damage and so on, unless mitigating measures are implemented."

UK Experts to Work With Global Partners to Tackle Global Grand Challenges

  • Part of the modern Industrial Strategy which includes ambitious plans to bring government, businesses and organisations to bring jobs, growth and opportunity to all corners of the UK.
The launch of the new UK-led, international project to protect the world’s oceans, the One Ocean Growth hub, is one of a number of new international research collaborations announced today by Science and Universities Minister Chris Skidmore.

The 28 projects, supported with £279 million of government investment through the modern Industrial Strategy, will see world-leading UK researchers collaborating with international partners to tackle some of the world’s biggest challenges – from tackling the growing problem of anti-microbial resistance, developing the next generation of eco-friendly packaging, to using the latest technology in AI to improve the lives of millions suffering from dementia.

The funding is part of the modern Industrial Strategy’s ambition to put the UK at the forefront of tackling the world’s grand challenges, generating jobs, opportunity and growth across the UK.

The projects include:
  • The One Ocean Hub, led by the University of Strathclyde, which will bring researchers and local communities together to keep oceans sustainable and cut pollution.
  • A UK-Israel Innovation programme - the first UK-Israel bilateral programme to support business-led innovation, working with the Israeli Innovation Authority to bring together Israeli strengths in start-up together with UK companies. It will develop and strengthen commercial relationships, provide access to large markets and enhance business competitiveness.
  • Tackling anti-microbial resistance - this research programme between the UK and India will develop solutions to tackle anti-microbial resistance which is a growing global health concern.
  • UK-Korea Health Sciences collaboration to focus on better diagnosis of dementia through the use of AI.
The partnerships with major international partners and economies including USA, Canada, Japan and Republic of Korea.

UK Government Launches World Leading Plan to Tackle Air Pollution

UK Environment Secretary Michael Gove launched an ambitious new strategy to clean up our air and save lives.

Air pollution is one of the biggest threats to public health in the UK - behind only cancer, obesity and heart disease - and the measures set out in the Clean Air Strategy will cut the costs of air pollution to society by £1.7 billion every year by 2020, rising to £5.3 billion every year from 2030.

The UK will set an ambitious, long-term target to reduce people’s exposure to particulate matter (PM), which the World Health Organization (WHO) has identified as the most damaging pollutant. To inform development of this new target, the Government will publish evidence early this year on what action would be needed to meet WHO guidelines.

This comes on top of a commitment to halve the number of people living in areas breaching WHO guidelines on PM by 2025. The UK is the first major economy to adopt air quality goals based on WHO recommendations, going far beyond EU requirements.

Launching the Clean Air Strategy, Environment Secretary Michael Gove said:

“The evidence is clear. While air quality has improved significantly in recent years, air pollution continues to shorten lives, harm our children and reduce quality of life."

“We must take strong, urgent action. Our ambitious strategy includes new targets, new powers for local government and confirms that our forthcoming Environment Bill will include new primary legislation on air quality."

“While air pollution may conjure images of traffic jams and exhaust fumes, transport is only one part of the story and the new strategy sets out the important role all of us - across all sectors of work and society - can play in reducing emissions and cleaning up our air to protect our health."

Government has launched an ambitious new strategy to clean up our air and save lives.

With a commitment to end the sale of conventional new diesel and petrol cars and vans from 2040, the UK is going further than almost every other European nation in tackling emissions from cars. But air pollution does not just come from transport and the Clean Air Strategy sets out a programme of work across government, industry and society to reduce emissions coming from a wide range of sources.

Following a recent increase in popularity, domestic burning on stoves and open fires is now the single biggest source of particulate matter emissions which is why as part of the new strategy we will:
  • introduce new legislation to prohibit the sale of the most polluting fuels
  • ensure that only the cleanest stoves are available for sale by 2022
  • continue to explore how we can give local authorities powers to increase the rate of upgrades of inefficient and polluting heating appliances
  • bring existing smoke control legislation up to date, and make it easier to enforce
We are also taking action to reduce air pollution from agriculture which is responsible for 88% of ammonia emissions by:
  • supporting farmers to invest in infrastructure and equipment to reduce emissions
  • introducing regulations to require farmers to use low emission farming techniques
  • introducing regulations to minimise pollution from fertiliser use
The government will provide farmers with the support they need to make these important changes. In September 2018 the government launched a new £3 million programme through the Catchment Sensitive Farming (CSF) partnership to fund a team of specialists who work with farmers and landowners in priority areas to provide training events, tailored advice, individual farm visits and support with grant applications.

Our Agriculture Bill already sets out how future financial support for the farming sector will be focussed on delivering improvements to the environment. We propose that a future environmental land management system should fund targeted action to protect habitats impacted by ammonia.

Our modern Industrial Strategy is putting the UK at the forefront of low carbon innovation ensuring we seize the opportunity of the global shift to clean growth. As part of this we are supporting investment in innovation to clean up our air. In partnership with UK Research and Investment (UKRI), we have launched a joint research programme worth £19.6 million to promote the development of cleaner technologies funded by the modern Industrial Strategy.

By taking action on air pollution, the Government can help people live well for longer and support the NHS Long Term Plan, which has a greater focus on prevention rather than cure. Revised damage costs for air pollutants, also published today, show the cost to society of air pollution per tonne of emissions is greater than previously thought for some pollutants.

The updated costs reflect our improved understanding of the long-term health impacts of air pollution, incorporating the costs of additional health conditions such heart disease and childhood asthma in addition to the effect of shortening lives, which was already included. This new work means that the estimated impact of the measures included in the Clean Air Strategy are larger than when the draft strategy was published for consultation last May.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock said:

“Air pollution is a health issue: it harms the health of the nation. For each of us, our health is unavoidably shaped by the environment we live in. Environmental factors determine around 30% of our healthy life expectancy. Air pollution poses the single greatest environmental threat to human health."

“Breathing dirty air is associated with a host of health problems, from asthma to cardiovascular disease and lung cancer, and all too often it is the most vulnerable – children, older people and those from poorer backgrounds – who are hit hardest. In short: clean air helps you live longer."

“No-one can tackle air pollution alone so it is a duty of Government to act for us all. We are determined to clean up our environment and are taking the lead with this Clean Air Strategy. We have made strides forward over the past few years and the action we are taking today will save lives and improve the health of the nation – both for those of us here today and for generations to come."

Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization, said:

“Air pollution kills 7 million people globally every year, making it one of the largest and most urgent threats to global health of our time."

New York City’s Styrofoam Ban
NEW YORK—Mayor de Blasio, Department of Sanitation Commissioner Kathryn Garcia, and Mayor’s Office of Sustainability Director Mark Chambers announced today that the City’s styrofoam ban is in effect, eliminating a major source of petroleum based waste.

From now, food service establishments, stores, and manufacturers may not possess, sell, or offer for use single service Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) foam food service articles or loose fill packaging, such as “packing peanuts.”

“Global warming is threatening our city, and to fight it, we have to change the way we live," said Mayor de Blasio. “The 60 million pounds of styrofoam New Yorkers throw away each year clog our landfills and fuel the petroleum economy destroying our planet. We’re ending this dirty practice so we can ensure a cleaner, fairer future for our children."

“Foam products cannot be recycled, plain and simple, and they have no place in our daily lives,” said Sanitation Commissioner Kathryn Garcia. “Foam is a source of litter in our neighborhoods, and it clogs our storm drains and pollutes our beaches. We cannot achieve zero waste without addressing the single-use products ubiquitous in modern life. This is our first step. We have fought for four years to ban these products in favor of reusable, recyclable and compostable alternatives. Today, I am proud to say today that we have prevailed and are moving toward a foam-free NYC."

As a result of the ban, manufacturers and stores may not sell or offer single-use foam items such as cups, plates, trays, or clamshell containers. There is a six month grace period from when the ban goes into effect from January 1, 2019 before fines can be imposed. DSNY, the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, and the Department of Consumer Affairs will continue to conduct outreach and education in multiple languages to businesses throughout all five boroughs. During the six-month warning period, businesses that still use foam products may receive a “warning card” reminding them of the ban and directing them to DSNY outreach resources.

“This long-overdue ban will put an end to Styrofoam littering our streets and clogging our waterways," said Mark Chambers, Director of the Mayor’s Office of Sustainability. “Now we must build on this progress by cutting out other wasteful, outdated products like single-use plastic bags and plastic straws."

New Yorkers throw away 60 million pounds of foam products each year. To help educate businesses about the new law, the Department of Sanitation has already contacted over 129,000 retailers and food service establishments. DSNY is also coordinating with elected officials, community boards, business improvement districts, business organizations and other stakeholders to ensure New Yorkers understand how to comply with this law. The Department’s Commercial Outreach team provides free in-person trainings and online webinars to businesses and will be conducting site visits around the city during the six-month warning period. Businesses can request to host a training or sign-up for a scheduled one by visiting nyc.gov/dsnybusinessresources.

Non-profits and small businesses with less than $500,000 in revenue per year may apply for hardship exemptions from the Department of Small Business Services if they can prove that the purchase of alternative products not composed of EPS would create undue financial hardship. Waivers granted will be valid for a one-year period beginning July 1, 2019 and on a rolling basis.

“Small businesses are the backbone of our city's economy - and DCA is committed to helping them thrive," said DCA Commissioner Lorelei Salas. “We are proud to partner with our fellow city agencies and play a role in ensuring zero waste to landfills by 2030 while also making sure businesses are not only aware of, but are operating under the law."

Under the de Blasio administration, New York City has become a global leader on climate change and sustainability. In 2014, Mayor de Blasio committed to reducing New York City’s greenhouse gas emissions 80 percent by 2050. In 2017, the Administration doubled down on its commitment to sustainability by delivering the first-ever city plan to align with the Paris Agreement’s goal of limiting warming to the global 1.5° Celsius target. To protect New Yorkers, the City is also moving forward with a $20 billion resiliency program designed to ensure that our neighborhoods, economy, and public services will be ready to withstand and emerge stronger from the impacts of climate change.

The City is also holding polluters to account by suing the five largest investor-owned fossil fuel companies who have contributed the most to climate change and is standing up for future generations and New York City pension holders by being the first major city in the nation to commit to divesting pension funds from fossil fuels. Building on this commitment, Mayor de Blasio, Comptroller Scott Stringer, and City pension trustees recently announced a goal of doubling New York City’s pension fund investments in climate solutions to $4 billion by 2021. In 2018, the City also launched “Bring It,” a sustainability campaign focused on empowering young New Yorkers to reduce waste and create a cleaner, fairer city.

Prince Charles Visits Ghana - with Cote D’Ivoire Produce 70% of the World's Cocoa

While in Ghana HRH Prince Charles visited a sustainable cocoa farm, an industry championed by UK aid.

HRH The Prince of Wales has visited a cocoa farm in Ghana to see how UK aid is helping farmers across the country to produce sustainable chocolate, create jobs, and reduce the impacts caused by climate change.

The cocoa products these farmers produce are being sold to companies selling chocolate bars and sweets in the UK and around the world – including Cadburys, Mars and Nestlé.

Ghana and Cote D’Ivoire jointly account for over two thirds of global cocoa production, but also suffer from one of the highest deforestation rates in Africa.

Cocoa farming is also under threat from increasing temperatures - putting thousands of livelihoods at risk.

In Ghana, UK aid is supporting over 70,000 cocoa farmers to become more resilient to the impacts of climate change and therefore better able to cope by using climate-smart cocoa agriculture which can protect against floods or drought.

Deforestation is a global problem
Minister for Africa Harriett Baldwin said:

“Thanks to UK aid, farmers in Ghana are learning sustainable farming techniques which protect cocoa crops from rising temperatures and the world’s leading cocoa and chocolate companies have committed to working to end deforestation and forest degradation."

“This project which HRH The Prince of Wales visited today helps to illustrate how our vital support is ensuring the longevity of the cocoa industry for this generation and many more to come. This is a win for Ghana and the UK."

The sustainably grown cocoa is also preserving the natural environment in Ghana, the Ivory Coast and Liberia, including critical wildlife habitats of the chimpanzee, and the natural resources local people depend upon.

UK aid’s support is expected to lead to almost £100 million of investment by the private sector in sustainable, climate resilience cocoa production – with the potential to create thousands more jobs in the future.

The UK is leading efforts bringing governments, industries and communities together to address deforestation in the cocoa supply chain, through the Cocoa and Forests Initiative (CFI).

The Cocoa and Forests Initiative, launched by HRH The Prince of Wales in March 2017, sets out agreed actions – by the Governments of Ghana and Cote d’Ivoire, and 35 of the world’s leading chocolate and cocoa companies – to end deforestation and restore forests in the cocoa-growing regions of West Africa.

Today HRH was briefed by the governments of Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire and leading chocolate and cocoa companies on progress made in ending deforestation.

Environmental Disaster: Humankind Faces the End

By the year 2050, the situation in Australia had deteriorated even further as the deserts of the arid interior spread ever outwards, slowly devouring the once fertile coastal regions.

Most areas of the coasts had already been lost to the rapidly rising seas while the increasing intensity of storms continued to wreak havoc along the nation’s 36,000-kilometre shoreline. The Great Barrier Reef had long disappeared and now the few people still alive faced the same end.

With global temperatures continuing to rise, the effects of an ever-warming climate had already driven the 800 species of Australian birds to extinction, joining all the iconic marsupials.

Although the world’s temperature had long passed the two degrees Celsius mark, set as the global safety point in 2015, it had yet to hit 3.5 degrees. This was the terminal stage when all human beings would die out as the plankton in the oceans was destroyed and temperature swings killed off most land plants.

Humans have never lived on a planet at 3.5 degrees above the twentieth century baseline so, by 2050, the world population had suffered massive falls and was dropping ever more sharply every year. In Australia, the number of people had plummeted from the peak of 60 million it had reached in the late 2030s after waves of refugees arrived in their millions during the mass migrations of the 2020s.

The number of arrivals skyrocketed as tens of thousands of over-crowded boats landed on almost every beach around the continent, swamping government efforts to control the influx. The declaration: “We will determine who comes into this country” had been made so long before that no-one alive could recall who the fool was who had uttered it.

But, just as Australia’s political leaders had been totally unprepared for the cataclysms that climate change was to wreak, so they failed to cope with the huge increase in human numbers.

In the late 2030s and early 2040s, the nation’s capital cities had become disaster zones with police and the military unable to handle the riots caused by tens of thousands of starving citizens. Food supplies had run out as the drought killed off crops in every state, leaving the once-fertile land barren and deserted.

Schools and universities had been shut down long before and their buildings taken over by armed gangs while the sick were left to die in the street when hospitals could no longer provide the beds, doctors, nurses or medical supples.

In remote areas of the country, well-armed groups set up encampments with food and weapons they had seized. Meantime, the towns and cities had become dark urban jungles where only the fittest survived.

Yet the calamities caused by the warming Earth could have been prevented: The first evidence of the massive changes that would transform planet Earth had occurred as early as the northern summer of 2016.

Melting Antarctic Ice Caps
That was when the top of the world began turning from white to blue as the ice that had long covered the north polar seas began to melt away. This monumental event triggered a cascade of effects that was to amplify global warming, destabilising the Earth’s entire climate system.

With the rapid disappearance of the polar ice cover, Earth lost its vast air conditioning system that had helped regulate and stabilise the planet’s climate for thousands of years.

In 2013, scientists had believed the world faced sea level rises of less than a metre by 2100. Within two years, climate experts were predicting at least a doubling and possibly even higher levels.

Before it began shedding its own heavy blankets of ice, the Antarctic continent held ninety per cent of the world’s fresh water and Greenland ten per cent. By the 2020s, Greenland was losing 500 billion tonnes of its ice a year, a rate that had more than doubled in the century after 1900.

Even at that stage, experts predicted that Greenland could raise global sea levels by seven metres if all its ice melted, although the biggest contribution was to come from Antarctica shedding billions of tonnes from its vast western ice sheet.

Before the great melt began in the 2020s, scientists had estimated there was enough ice to raise sea levels by 60 metres if it ever all turned to water.

With the melting of the Arctic ice cap, followed by masssive collapses of the Greenland and West Antarctic icesheets, the low-lying Pacific islands were the first to disappear beneath the waves. Inundation of large areas of Asia forced billions more people to flee –100 million from a flooded Bangladesh alone. The arrival in the 2020s of tens of thousands of New Zealanders in Australia was the forerunner of a vast human tide sweeping across the surrounding oceans.

Of the millions who tried to escape by boat from coastal communities in Pakistan, China, India and other Asian nations further north, a majority never survived the journey over the storm-tossed waters.

But enough arrived in Australia to swell human numbers to record heights at a time when the country itself was experiencing its worst period of droughts, deadly bushfires and destructive cyclones.

The refugees had hoped to find a Promised Land but instead discovered a nation whose own people were desperately struggling to survive.

For too long had Australians cleared the land of its original forests and grasslands, drained the soil of its nutrients, emptied the lakes and the rivers, dug up the minerals and turned much of the country into lunar landscapes.

As far back as 2015, a nationwide study by senior ecologists revealed the scale of destruction with almost a million square kilometres cleared of its original bushlands – about a seventh of the entire Australian continent.

Likewise, the temperate eucalypt woodlands of south-eastern Australia that had previously covered more than a million square kilometres, now occupied less than half that after being cleared for agriculture and urban development.

By this time, the planet had lost more than 3 million square kilometres of wilderness in little more than 20 years. Africa and South America had been most affected yet these continents were essential for sustaining complex ecosystem processes at a regional and planetary scale.

There was also another important service the wilderness areas provided: They stored vast amounts of carbon in their forests. Their disappearance was another sign of the global crisis that had become obvious even before the twentieth century faded into history.

As early as 1975, some scientists were warning that if global temperatures rose by more than two degrees above pre-industrial levels, the Earth’s climate would then be `outside the range of observations that had been made over the last 7,000 years...’

In 1988, NASA scientist James Hansen told the US Congress how greenhouse gas emissions were directly related to rising temperatures and the dangers of climate change.

Hansen warned that the Earth was warmer in 1988 than it had ever been, that human-caused emissions were responsible and that temperatures were likely to continue to rise, increasing the prospects of extreme weather events. This was decades before any government considered taking preventative action.

In 1990 Swedish scientists suggested curbing sea level rises by restricting the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

But all the warnings were made thirty years before any significant steps were taken by governments around the globe to tackle climate change.

By which time it was already too late. A global agreement, adopted in Paris on 12 December 2015 did call for sharp cuts to greenhouse gases emissions. It offered the prospect of prompt action, although even then it was not set to start until 2020.

The Paris Agreement, however, was so weak that nations were bound only to submit increasingly stringent pledges every five years but were not obliged to actually implement them.

That was why the Australian government had readily joined the crowd ratifying the agreement – not because it had shown any inclination to change its desultory approach to curbing greenhouse gases, but because not signing might unnecessarily risk Australia’s already tattered reputation on climate change.

Yet Australia had been among world leaders in 2013 when it adopted a carbon pricing scheme that had proved effective elsewhere in forcing industries to cut their greenhouse gas emissions or face higher costs.

After his election that year, Coalition Prime Minister Tony Abbott abolished the scheme and replaced it with a laughable 'Direct Action Abatement' project that had precisely no impact on rising emission levels.

While Australia had not been a massive contributor to the warming of Earth, its citizens were to suffer, like every other human on the planet, the ultimate consequence of extinction. And all because successive governments had failed to collaborate with those that were taking climate change seriously.

Oblivious to the dangers, Australians blindly plunged on. Into the abyss...
